Emotional Self Care

Self-care is the act of taking care of yourself so that you can be well to live the life that you desire and meet the demands that life brings. At Swell, we genuinely value and promote the importance of self-care and are committed to sharing ideas and ways to improve how you care for yourself. Over the next few weeks we’re highlighting the different types of self care.

First up - Emotional Self-Care.

Emotional Self-Care is such a big part of people’s mental health care. Most humans, at some point (or points) in their lives, encounter stressful situations and experience bad days. We also share exciting or joyful moments. Whether we have good, bad, or okay days, it is essential to process our emotions in healthy ways.

Definition: Emotional self-care consists of practices that help people recognize, connect, and express their emotions in a healthy, safe way regularly.

Examples

  • Spend time or connect with friends or family members

  • Seek professional help from a therapist, counselor, psychiatrist, or psychologist

  • Practice positive self-talk and affirmations, and compliment yourself regularly.

  • Spend time in nature

  • Journaling to express your thoughts or feelings

  • Tracking your mood using an app or journal

  • Practice meditating

  • Create a vision board or inspirational collage

  • Set boundaries

  • Express yourself through art

  • Deep breathing

  • Take breaks from social media

  • Do a mental health workbook

  • Join a support group or group therapy
