Long Distance Date Ideas - Staying Connected While Far Apart

Long-distance relationships can be challenging. Couples sometimes struggle with feeling connected with their spouses or partners when they live far away. For military couples living long distances is all too due to deployments and training exercises. As a relationship therapist, I encourage couples to be creative and intentional about dating. It is key when it comes to staying connected, whether you live together or far apart.

Here are some ideas to build intimacy and connection when you’re apart from your partner and spouse:

  • Virtual dinner dates. Schedule a time when you both can have dinner together. Get dressed up and make it a date.

  • Read the same book or watch the same movie or show and plan to discuss them together by video or phone.

  • Play an online or app game together.

  • Have a virtual wine or beer tasting.

  • Cook each other’s favorite foods together.

  • Take the love language test together and share ways that your partner expresses your love language well.

  • Plan your next getaway together.

  • Send them a care package of goodies or lingerie to open on your next virtual date.

  • Watch a live music performance together.

  • Take a bath together after a long day.

  • Create a playlist and listen to music together.
