Design Contest
We’re kicking off year 3 with a Design Competition for our next round of SWAG (shirts, stickers, etc.) 3 winners who will receive a gift card, SWAG, and 2 will receive a paid brand design opportunity for Swell’s soon-to-be-launched self-guided therapy app. A team of judges will choose the top winner, and we’ll host voting to select a fan favorite, along with a military creator spotlight winner.
About Us
Swell is a mental health platform designed to meet military families where they are. Our approach to mental health combines a new category of preventative & interventional programs with traditional 1:1 therapy. We launched our telehealth app along with Swell Circles (an in-person community network with free events like self-care nights) to hundreds of military families at Fort Campbell last year. Next, we’re scaling Swell to more bases while we build out our self-guided behavioral therapy app. This app uses behavioral psychology with hyper-custom plans to help people learn skills and frameworks for improving their relationships with themselves and others outside of a 1:1 session. We hope this will bridge the gap for those who are struggling but not yet ready to see a therapist - and we’re making it available to military spouses for free the first year (request early access here).
Theme: Growth. Swell.
You can take this in a number of directions, it’s up to you - but if inspiration is helpful, here’s some background on how our company became “Swell”:
Naming Swell was a months-long process. When we landed on Swell, we loved it for a number of reasons, one of them being that the word means “to grow”. Growth is our purpose. We help people grow mentally and emotionally both within themselves and their communities. We also loved the imagery associated with breathing and nature, and the overall happy nostalgic ‘vibe’ of “Swell”.
P.s. Shout-out to Hayley Menser, one of the early advisors to Swell and a military spouse stationed in Okinawa. She said “All’s Well. Swell” & the idea took off from there.
Submission Rules & Requirements:
Design must incorporate our logo and be totally original (created only by you, not AI ;))
Our brand is a little nostalgic - we use a lot of rounded edges and faded colors. Bonus points if it fits within this brand definition, but it doesn’t have to. Creativity over conformity here. On that note: The color palette provided in the PR kit below is a starting point, not an ending one.
All designs must be original creations of the contestant (this means totally by the contestant and not AI), and incorporate the Swell logo in some way.
Submissions must not have been previously published and must not contain profanity, trademarks, other organization's logos, or any copyrighted works of any other person or business. They can (and should) contain an artist signature.
Design(s) must be submitted in a .png or .pdf format, on the Contest website via the submission form by 11:59pm (ET) on April 28th, 2024.
Designs must be created in Adobe (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop), Canva, Vectornator or something similar that can render a scalable file.
Winning designer agrees to sign a waiver to allow Swell (Sage Health Labs, Inc) the use of their design for any and all printing and promotional purposes.
Contest winners must agree to submit a high-resolution layered vector art file within 7 days of notification and agree to work with Swell's printer if slight changes/modifications are necessary for production. If not, an alternate winner may be chosen due to meet the SWAG production deadlines.

All designers will receive an email the day Fan Voting begins (April 29th) with links to everywhere fans can vote. We’ll also add that information to the top of this (design contest) page.

Specifics
Publicity and Agreement: Contest entry constitutes an agreement by the submitting designers to grant free license of all copyrights of the submitted works to Sage Health Labs, Inc in perpetuity, for publicity and promotional purposes. Entries will be subject to approval by Swell Health to ensure they comply with contest rules prior to public voting.
Media Release: By submitting artwork, you agree that if your design wins, Sage Health Labs, Inc retains first printing rights and a free license, in perpetuity, to utilize the design on t-shirts and other promotional items, and marketing, fundraising, and public relations materials. You are guaranteeing that your design does not contain any copyrighted material, including images/copy found on the internet, unless clearly marked as published under a Creative Commons (cc) license. Contest entrants who are not selected as the winning designers retain all rights to their artwork.
$250 Brand Commission Opportunity: This is a freelance brand design opportunity to create artistic brand elements for Swell. Winners are not required to accept the brand commission contract.
Judging Process
The whole team at Swell will individually evaluate each submission based on the rubric criteria and give a 1-10.
Scores will be averaged across all judges to determine the final scores for each submission.
The submission with the highest total score will be selected as the winner.
Note: If requested, our team will provide constructive feedback along with their scores after the contest to help participants improve their designs.

Originality: How unique and innovative is the design?
Conceptualization: Does the design effectively convey the intended message or theme?
Visual Impact: Does the design catch the eye and make a memorable impression?
Relevance to Theme
Alignment: Does the design reflect the theme of the contest (e.g., Growth or Swell)?
Brand fit: Does the design fit into Swell’s overall brand aesthetic?
Aesthetics
Composition: Is the design well-balanced and visually appealing?
Color Scheme: Are the colors harmonious and appropriate for the theme?
Typography (if applicable): Is the choice of font(s) suitable and enhances the overall design?
Wearability and Versatility
Practicality: Is the design suitable for printing on a t-shirt and maintaining its visual impact?
Adaptability: Can the design be resized or adapted for various SWAG (shirt vs sticker) without losing quality?
Wearability: Would people want to wear this out and about? On a shirt or their water bottle or laptop?
Bonus Points
Social Media Engagement: Has the design generated buzz or received positive feedback on social media platforms?
Community Impact: Does the design contribute positively to the morale or emotional wellbeing of someone who sees it?
