Resource Recommendation: ACT Journal
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a newer approach of therapy that helps people develop psychological flexibility—the ability to be present, open up to difficult thoughts and feelings, and take action aligned with their values. Instead of trying to eliminate uncomfortable emotions or thoughts, ACT teaches acceptance and mindfulness skills alongside commitment to behavior change, empowering individuals to live more meaningful and fulfilling lives.
ACT was developed in the late 1980’s by psychologist Steven C. Hayes, along with other colleagues. It stems from behavioral therapies, which integrate traditional behaviorism with mindfulness and acceptance strategies. A key difference with ACT is the approach of how to manage negative thoughts or difficult feelings. Rather than challenging or replacing negative thoughts/feelings, ACT encourages accepting them, while committing to behaviors that reflect one’s values.
Over the years, ACT has gained strong empirical support and has been applied to a wide range of mental health issues including anxiety, depression, chronic pain, addiction, and more. It has also become popular in coaching, workplace settings, and general wellness practices.
There are many resources available to personalize the practice of ACT. Here is one of my favorites!
Dr. Diana Hill’s ACT Daily Journal is a fantastic resource for anyone looking to deepen their understanding and practice of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This workbook provides practical, research-based exercises that help readers cultivate psychological flexibility, manage difficult emotions, and live in alignment with their values.
Dr. Hill’s expertise shines through in the clear, engaging, and compassionate way she presents ACT principles. The reader is guided through journaling exercises to practice the ACT skills and to facilitate personalizing of the learning. Whether you're a therapist looking to integrate ACT into your practice or an individual seeking personal growth, this workbook offers valuable tools to navigate life’s challenges with greater mindfulness and resilience.
