Joy in the Ordinary Moments
“Joy is not a constant. It comes to us in moments - often ordinary moments. Sometimes we miss out on the bursts of joy because we're too busy chasing down the extraordinary moments. Other times we're so afraid of the dark we don't dare let ourselves enjoy the light. A joyful life is not a floodlight of joy. That would eventually become unbearable. I believe a joyful life is made up of joyful moments gracefully strung together by trust, gratitude and inspiration.”
- Brené Brown
This quote has stuck with me since I first read it many years ago. I often sought out extraordinary moments thinking these were what life was all about. While those are wonderful when they occur, life truly happens in the small, simple moments where we find joy. What are ordinary, daily moments that bring you joy? One for me is drinking coffee on the couch with my dogs (yes, I let my dogs on the couch :)). Or feeling the sun on my skin on a cold day. Or hearing my nephew laugh.
Sometimes, we have to be intentional when looking for these moments of joy. Slowing down and being fully present has helped me to see these moments for what they are, and to relish in the simple joys they provide. Life is spinning by so quickly, there is a lot going on in our world right now that can keep us anxious, distracted or hustling. Taking time to recognize these moments bring joy and connection to our everyday lives. Look for them. Be grateful for them. Celebrate them. Create them. You’re worth it. Your life is worth it.
